THIS MONTH: Managing Diabetes When Exercising
MEETING TIME:  Monday, August 8th, 7:00-8:30pm
LOCATION:  Sharp Medical Facility

THIS MONTH:  Exercise is important to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. But, it is also an added and sometimes confusing variable to diabetes control. Matthew Schoenherr, Sharp Hospital Exercise Physiologist will review the effects of exercise related to insulin users and add simple decision making tools to successfully manage diabetes and exercise.

LAST MONTH: We had a lively discussion about insurance plans and coverage.  When anything changes with your insurance (company or plan, supplier of diabetes products) find out what is covered before you order and end up having to pay for items you thought were covered or embroiled in a frustrating battle with your insurance company.

Pre-Meeting Dinner (Souplantation): Several of us get together about 5:30 before each meeting for dinner, and all are welcome!  Anyone who would like a bite of dinner before the meeting can join us this month at the Souplantation Restaurant in Kearny Mesa, 7095 Clairemont Mesa Boulevard (just east of 805), 858-715-6824.  Please be ready to leave the restaurant by 6:45 and proceed to Sharp so that our speakers and non-dining members are not delayed.

As always, significant others and any friends and family supporters are always welcome at the meeting.  Our meetings are held the 2nd Monday of every month.

*****Dexcom G5 App Study
Who: Males & Females, 16 to 65 diagnosed with Diabetes
When: Thursday, August 11th and Friday, August 12th
Length: 1 hour, Pay: $100
Where: Plaza Research San Diego (UTC area)

If interested in the Dexcom G5 App study, please enter the link below in your browser and fill out the survey. Not all will qualify.  Those that qualify will be contacted and fully screened and scheduled for the paid focus group.  If you have any questions, please call their office (858) 200-3000.

*****UCSD Study
The study is evaluating the effects of sotagliflozin, a dual SGLT-1 and SGLT-2 inhibitor, in T1 diabetics. The drug is designed to help smooth out high glucose values and may also assist in losing weight.
We are looking for:
*Type 1 diabetic, diagnosed at least 1 year ago
*18 or over – no limit
*No diabetic medications other than insulin
*A1c 7.0 – 11.0 %
*Willing & able to use provided glucose meter with cloud link
This study is closing soon. Subjects must screen by SEPT 2.

Study Commitment:
The period of participation is approximately 7 months. In-person clinic visits are as follows:
*Screening
*1-2 weeks later – Dispense drug
*2 weeks later – Check in
*4 weeks later – follow up
*4 weeks later – follow up
*8 weeks later – follow up
*8 weeks later – follow up
Compensation is $100 for screening, $75 for each visit thereafter.

*****If you have diabetes books that you may like to give away, will you PLEASE bring them to the Pumper's meeting in August or September.  Long-time pumper Nathan Feinstein will give them away FREE to Native Americans at the Barona and Sycuan Powwows On Sept 2-4 and 16-18, respectively.
     As you may be aware, Native Americans have twice the rate of diabetes of other Americans and half the money, except the few who are associated with casinos. These events will include people from all over  America, who will be competing for cash prices by performing beautiful traditional Indian dances.
   This will be Feinstein's 4th and 5th appearances at these Powwows. Feinstein is volunteering with the Heartland Coalition, HeatlandCln.org, a 501c3 charity. If you would like a tax receipt, please so note and provide your email address, etc..
   Last year every book offered was scooped-up gratefully.
