We are looking for volunteers to work with us remotely this fall as part of the DDI student projects. The DDI team will work on a handful of specific design problems around diabetes technology such as continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems.

Starting early October 2020!

Participants will be working with student design teams two to three times during the Fall (Oct 6 thru Dec 8) period for interviews about challenges using your CGM and then one to two times testing their prototypes online.

If interested, please go to our website ddi.ucsd.edu click “Contact Us”

July 13th Meeting: Gvoke HypoPen Presentation by William Lai

San Diego Insulin Pumpers
Mutual Support - General Discussion - Expert Speakers
All pumpers, companions, and friends welcome!

Don't miss the July 13th meeting of the San Diego Insulin Pumpers via ZOOM

THIS MONTH:
MEETING TIME: July 13th 7:00-8:30pm (check in at 6:45 pm)
LOCATION: From the comfort of your home.

THIS MONTH: William Lai from Xeris will give a presentation on the newly released Gvoke HypoPen. This is the new glucagon (Gvoke), a liquid stable glucagon from Xeris Pharmaceuticals for subcutaneous injection; it was approved by the FDA last year. It will be available to diabetics in a HypoPen formulation (very similar to an EpiPen) in July 2020. Currently, it’s available only as a pre-filled syringe. After the presentation, we will have Open Discussion until 9 pm.

LAST MONTH: Our ZOOM meeting was attended by 14 Pumpers. Thank you to Tom Fitzpatrick for his comprehensive presentation on the current hybrid closed-loop pump options available and hybrid closed-loop pump best practices. There are four current hybrid closed-loop pump options. The Medtronic 670, the Tandem Control IQ, Loop, and Open APS. Tom focused on the Tandem Control IQ Pump though most of the information applies to all pumps. Know your settings for optimal success! Having accurate basil rate, carb-to-insulin ratio, and correction factor parameters is key. Pre-bolusing for meals along with extended meal bolusing helps. LET THE SYSTEM WORK!  Use the activity modes for sleep and exercise. Start exercise mode one hour before your exercise session. Tips: Turn off insulin when you disconnect so your on-board insulin is accurate. Change your sensor when the BG reading provides "Bad Data." The Control IQ depends on sensor accuracy. Most Control IQ users find their time-in-range increases. Your Diabetes May Vary!

For pumpers having blood sugar or other pump issues, please take a screen shot of your pump/BG issue for sharing with the group.

ZOOM is available via desktop, laptop, tablet and smartphone. Select the largest screen size available for an optimal experience. An audio-only option will be available.

June 8th Meeting: Hybrid Closed-Loop Pump Best Practices

San Diego Insulin Pumpers
Mutual Support - General Discussion - Expert Speakers
All pumpers, companions, and friends welcome!

Don't miss the June 8th meeting of the San Diego Insulin Pumpers via ZOOM

THIS MONTH: Hybrid Closed-Loop Pump Best Practices
MEETING TIME: June 8th 7:00-8:30 pm
CHECK IN TIME 6:45 pm
LOCATION: From the comfort of your home

THIS MONTH:  Tom will lead a discussion on Hybrid Closed Loop Pump Best Practices. We look forward to Pumpers on the Medtronic 670 and Tandem Control IQ along with any Loopers to share their Pump system strengths/weaknesses and the behaviors they had to change in order to not get in ‘fights’ with the automation.

LAST MONTH:  The 2nd ZOOM Pump club was attended by 17 Pumpers with over 750 years of diabetes experience! Topics discussed included high blood sugars and fluctuating blood sugars. Those with the Tandem Control IQ are finding their BGs are in range more frequently. Several pumpers have experienced multiple sensor failures.  All were encouraged to call Dexcom to report the problem and receive a no-cost replacement sensor.  A helpful tip: keep track of when your transmitter will expire. Transmitters with less than 10 days of battery life left will not allow a sensor to start causing sensor failure. Pay attention to those transmitter alarms!

For pumpers having blood sugar or other pump issues, please take a screen shot of your pump/BG issue for sharing with the group.

Tom's 2-minute tip: How to "Unstick" the guide needle in a G6 inserter. Do not press the inserter into the skin. This can cause the needle to not retract after pushing the inserter button. Here's a very low-tech solution for releasing the needle: Use a wooden spoon and whack the gray ridges area of the inserter with the spoon to release the needle.

ZOOM is available via Desktop, Laptop, Tablet and Smartphone. Select the largest screen size available for an optimal experience. An audio-only option will be available.

You can join the videoconference meeting Monday, June 8th from 6:45 by clicking the link below on your smartphone, tablet, or computer:

LAST MONTH:  Veronica Diaz Lode (RD, CDE, San Diego Territory Manager, & Clinical Specialist) and Kristy Castillo (RN, CDE, & Type 1) gave a comprehensive overview on Tandem's Control IQ system. Control IQ, an advanced hybrid closed-loop technology, uses Dexcom G6 data to predict and control blood sugars. Control IQ improves time-in-range. Important note: Loss of CGM readings for over 20 minutes will stop Control IQ. Extended boluses will not be stopped—only basil. Tips from Kristy: Set High Alert on 160 to catch highs more quickly. Suspend insulin whenever disconnecting to not lose insulin corrections.

Good Advice from the Diabetes Research Connection

While T1D‘s are not at a greater risk of contracting the disease, it is important to take precautionary measures.

These include measuring your blood glucose levels frequently and keeping them in the normal range. This will help ensure greater resistance and a faster recovery.

More frequent monitoring of ketones is critical, especially if your blood glucose is elevated due to sickness, cold therapeutics containing sugar or syrup, and inactivity.

Steroidal decongestants are also likely to increase your blood glucose levels. Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) may exhibit flu-like symptoms, which is why it is important to measure ketones with test strips available from your local pharmacy or online. Additional amounts of insulin may be required under these circumstances.

Contact your physician(s) immediately if you have been exposed to the virus or have symptoms.

Be sure to stock an adequate supply (a minimum of two weeks) of all your medications. For more advice managing T1D during this pandemic, please visit: https://www.jdrf.org/coronavirus/.
