February 14th Meeting: Open Discussion About Emergency Supplies

San Diego Insulin Pumpers

Mutual Support - General Discussion - Expert Speakers

All pumpers, companions, and friends welcome!

____________________________________

Don't miss the February 14th meeting of the San Diego Insulin Pumpers via ZOOM!

WHAT:  Monday, February 14th from 6:45 till 9:00 pm

TOPIC: Open Discussion - Strategies for stockpiling diabetes supplies and prescription medications.

As always, significant others and any friends and family supporters are always welcome at the meeting.  Our meetings are held the 2nd Monday of every month.

____________________________________

This Month

Open Discussion: Bring your questions and concerns for help and discussion. Starting in 2022 we are adding a topic for discussion in addition to any questions and concerns Pumpers wish to talk about. The February topic is  how to stockpile diabetes supplies and prescription medications.

____________________________________

Last Month

Open discussion topics included kidney disease, managing diabetes with other illnesses, and HICAP ( Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy), a California organization for seniors who need help with all forms of insurance. The website is  https://sdinsulinpumpers.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=10bf3478ca168b1633b80832c&id=b4fa88a745&e=7210f09b7c.  Go to the county you live in and click on link for their local office. Phone: 800-434-0222.

For short and long-term protection against emergencies, we discussed creating GoBags and Emergency Caches.

GoBag

A GoBag is a short-term emergency stash of supplies to keep with you. It should have a 3-7 day supply, depending on your comfort level. The diabetes travel cases made by Wherever EuGo make creating a GoBag easy. They include Frio cool packs that keep insulin cold.

Emergency Cache

An Emergency Cache is stored at a different location from your home for access during major emergencies when you can't get home. You could store your cache with a family member, a close friend, where you work, or at your church.

Below is a list of basic supplies to put in your emergency cache. It should have a 2-4 week supply based on your management protocols.

Cache Contents

1) Insulin in vials or pens, Afrezza, and syringes with needles.

2) Blood sugar meter with test strips, Ketone meter, lancets, and backup batteries.

3) Alcohol wipes, hand sanitizer, and sharps container.

4) Glucose (tablets or liquid), and a Glucagon kit (spray or Gvoke HypoPen).

5) Pump supplies, infusion sets, cartridges with syringes, or pods.

6) Skin barriers/adhesive products (i.e., Tagaderm, Mepore film, etc., skin tact, and paper tape.

7) CGM sensors, transmitters, and related supplies.

8) Plug-in chargers for diabetes devices, a large battery charger (the Halo Bolt lasts over 8 hours), or a smaller battery charger.

9) Regular batteries.

10) Prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and supplements.

11) Non-perishable food supplies and water.

12) Miscellaneous toiletries, first-aid kit, soap, shampoo, sun screen, and toilet paper.

13) Cooler and cool packs for insulin.

14) Documents: ID, insurance card, prescriptions, cash, and an emergency-contact list. Consider including your medication list and your medical history to share with medical personnel.

Keep your Emergency Cache up-to-date by switching out perishable items when you receive new supplies.

**Check out Diabetesdisasterresponsecoalition.org for great suggestions**

Note: Click the link Stockpiling Emergency Supplies to the right to see these lists on a separate page. Please post your additions, improvements, and corrections in the Comments block at the bottom so we can continually make this list more valuable.

Dexcom Rep Linda Nunes. along with Clinical Nurse Educator Khadija Thomas. discussed the benefits of the Dexcom G6 sensors. Khadija went through the features of the Clarity App. For those without a smartphone, the Clarity App can be created on the Dexcom website. For ease of sharing data with your doctor's office, you can request a 12-digit share code. You only need to do this once for your doctor's office to be able to access your information for appointments.

For fewer night-time alarms, check your settings for alarm volume. Go to Device Settings > Options > Sound Options. Your pump has four options from vibrate to high volume. There are eight categories of Alarms, Alerts, and Reminders that you can choose to set the sound volume. There is also the ability to turn off Pump Alert and Reminders under My Pump. Check out these very helpful features for reducing pump alarm noise.

Don't forget to order a supply of the Dexcom Overpatch. The link is on the pump club blog in the Manufacturers page under Dexcom. This free helpful product from Dexcom helps keep the sensors attached for the 10 days of sensor use.

For those with skin issues who use devices with adhesive, check out the Facebook group for those with adhesive issues. Helpful tip from a pumper to help reduce skin irritation: Take the tabs off the sensor and put the code tab in safe place. Then let the sensor "air out" for at least two hours. Recommended: Use spray-on Flomax along with DuoDerm extra thin for a skin barrier under the sensor to prevent skin rashes.

The G7 will hopefully be available during the 1st quarter of 2022. This is. of course. pending FDA approval. You will be switched to the G7 when you expect your G6 transmitter is going to expire so keep that in mind when ordering sensors.

Tandem Pump Trainer Kristy Castillo, RN, CDE, gave a comprehensive overview on the Control IQ Pump features while Moriah fielded questions in the chat room.

Kristy made several interesting points:

• Using Control IQ can increase your time-in-range by 10%.

• Control IQ will help you and your doctor reach the standard of care goal of 70-180% time-in-range.

• The Control IQ algorithm predicts your blood sugar 30 minutes ahead then adjusts your basil rate to reduce or increase your insulin for greater time-in-range.

The pump has two helpful modes:

• Exercise Mode: Make sure to turn this on 1-2 hours before starting intensive exercise.

• Sleep Mode: This great feature maintains stable blood sugars overnight. If your basil rate shuts off nightly consider adjusting your nighttime basil rate. Set sleep mode for a minimum of five hours. For a restful night's sleep consider which alarms and alerts can be set to low or vibrate (My Pump > Options > Alerts & Reminders).

Other helpful points:

• Go to Options > My CGM > CGM Alerts to manage CGM alarms.

• Go to Options > Device Settings > Sound Volume to control sound volumes.

• Set up multiple basil rate settings for managing stress, shift work, steroids, weekend schedules, altitude, alcohol use, and hormonal changes.

• Consider treating lows with less carbs since Control IQ prevents/reduces severe lows.

• Bolus timing with meals remains important to avoid after-meal spikes.

• Tandem offers five types of infusion sets. Check out the tandem YouTube videos to learn the features of each one. Have your doctor write your infusion set prescription for any type, not a specific type, so you can order different types if desired. You can request samples of the different types from Tandem to see which one you prefer before ordering from your supplier.

• To keep your pump charged, connect it to your charger while showering.

• Check out links to Tandem Classes and online help on the Pump Club Blog at www.sdinsulinpumpers.blogspot.com.
