April Meeting 2016

Don't Miss the APRIL meeting of the San Diego Insulin Pumpers!!!

THIS MONTH: Selecting Medicare Plans that cover Devices and/or Supplies
MEETING TIME: Monday, April 11th, 7:00-8:30pm
LOCATION: Sharp Medical Facility 8695 Spectrum Centre Blvd, Room 186

THIS MONTH: Two representatives from United Healthcare will speak to us on how to select the correct Medicare insurance that will cover our Pump and CGM devices and supplies. This is an important meeting for anyone on Medicare or close to signing up for Medicare.

LAST MONTH: We had an amazing meeting facilitated by Veronica Lode RD, LDN, CDE with Tandem Pumps. Veronica assembled a panel of 4 Type 1’s that regularly participate in intense exercise. The main message was any activity lasting over 1 hour requires refueling to replenish the body and your blood sugar.

Some of the most popular snack items for refueling are granola/energy bars, peanut butter and crackers, fruit and veggie puree in pouches (check the baby food isle), Honey Stingers (a gummy bear with a honey center), chocolate milk, glucose tablets and Snickers bars.

Try to have all bolus insulin out of your system before starting intense exercise to help prevent lows. To prevent night time lows after intense exercise, consider lowering your basil rate and eat protein in your bedtime snack. Another suggestion was to use a long-acting insulin such as Lantus to inject for part of the basil rate. Long-acting insulins are less volatile than short-acting insulins and work better with intense activity. Another reason for using a long-acting insulin with intense physical activity is if your infusion set gets pulled out or goes bad, you have the long-acting insulin on board to lower the risk of ketoacidosis.

Pre-Meeting Dinner (Souplantation): Several of us get together about 5:30 before each meeting for dinner, and all are welcome!  Anyone who would like a bite of dinner before the meeting can join us this month at the Souplantation Restaurant in Kearny Mesa, 7095 Clairemont Mesa Boulevard (just east of 805), 858-715-6824.  Please be ready to leave the restaurant by 6:45 and proceed to Sharp so that our speakers and non-dining members are not delayed.

As always, significant others and any friends and family supporters are always welcome at the meeting.  Our meetings are held the 2nd Monday of every month.
