We must announce, with great sadness, that Laurie Kincaid, a long-time member of the Pump Club, passed away on May 9th. In recent years, Laurie attended our meetings with Daisy, her Diabetes Alert Dog. Laurie helped schedule speakers after John Rodosevich retired from the Pump Club. Laurie worked at a travel agency before taking on, for over a decade, full-time caregiving duties for her parents.

In the past few years, Laurie faced many medical challenges and had the loving support of fellow pumper Patrick Neal and her many good friends. For those of you who would like to write a memorial for Laurie's family, go to www.EverLoved.com. LAST MONTH: John Walsh had a great presentation on research regarding complications and the treatments and preventative actions people with diabetes can take. A link to John's presentation will be posted on the Pump Club blog soon.

John is working on a new book regarding complications, prevention, and treatments. His presentation was an overview of the book's content. High-glucose levels cause a number of health issues such as cardiac, arterial damage, and loss of kidney function. Oxidation caused by high BGs causes inflammation that, in turn, causes the cellular damage. Controlling blood sugars with greater time-in-range is very important (pumps are a great help to achieve this goal). The main goals for reducing complications are lowering blood sugars, lowering blood pressure to under 120, taking a statin medication, eating a healthy varied diet, and exercising. John recommends a number of supplements to help counteract cellular damage. We will let you know when the presentation link is available.

Topic: Secrets About Complications, Prevention, and Treatments. Join us to hear John's latest research and have your questions answered by a Master in Diabetes Management.

LAST MONTH: Open Discussion was attended by 15 Pumpers. Most of the Pumpers are now vaccinated! Hydrate well before having the vaccine to help avoid side effects.

Topics Discussed: Update your T Connect App to reduce the battery drain on your phone.

Tandem Pump users should upload the new Control IQ software.  To check your version, go to Options, click on My Pump, scroll down to and click on Pump Info, then scroll down to t:slim Software. Check which version you have: Moonight 7.3 or Moonlight 7.4. To get the update if your pump is in warranty, go to the Tandem website, take the tutorial, then download the update. Plan to download the software update when you need to make a cartridge change.

Alternate infusion set locations were discussed.  The best options are: Outside of upper thigh, upper arms, and upper backside.

THIS MONTH:  Open Discussion We continue to hold our Pumpers meetings via ZOOM in 2021. Bring your questions, issues and comments. For Pumpers having blood sugar or other pump issues, please take a screen shot of your pump/BG issue for sharing with the group.

LAST MONTH: Shores Salter, Omnipod Territory Manager, and Lauren Weiler CDE, Clinical Services Manager, gave a comprehensive presentation of the Omnipod pump. The Omnipod is currently available with the Euros or Dash controller. The 3rd generation Euros uses radio waves and the 4th generation Dash uses Bluetooth technology. To check out an Omnipod contact Shores to request the Promise Program, a 45 day trial. The Omnipod PDM includes the Calorie King for help with carb counting and, with the Dash, can share data with up to 12 people. The Omnipod 5 is expected in the near future and will be partnered with the Dexcom CGM. Our website has the contact information for Shores and Lauren.

After the Omnipod presentation we had a brief open discussion where a very important topic was brought up. When filling out the DMV form do you need to answer YES to the question regarding diabetes and health issues? For a detailed answer check out Kriss Halpern's website: diabetesattorney.net.

Kris is a Type 1 lawyer that has discussed this issue at TCOYD events. On his website, scroll down to the end of his home page and you will find Diabetes and DMV articles. Click on the diabetes and license-renewal article to get a legal description of the circumstances required for answering NO to the Health question you think should require a YES. All the DMV articles are very interesting and helpful.

T1D Now on C-19 Vaccine Eligibility List

San Diego county has released a document called Eligible High-Risk Medical Conditions and Disabilities. Our favorite condition, Type 1 diabetes mellitus, appears as the very last eligible condition at the bottom of page 2.

To get vaccinated, you first have to try your healthcare provider, then, if that isn't possible, go to the county.

Second, you have to prove you live or work in San Diego county and you have Type 1.

LAST MONTH: Our Open Discussion was attended by 16 Pumpers.

About 1/3 of the Pumpers have been able to be vaccinated. Hopefully more have been successful this month. I can recommend the Sharp Coronado vaccination site. It was worth the drive with no traffic or parking hassles. Topics discussed included hearing aids (Costco was recommended as a good vendor), prescription copay cards for reducing our insulin copay costs, insulin companies low-income programs, and the replacement pump for the Medtronic 670 pump.

LAST MONTH: Chloe Diez from Mannkind spoke about using Afrezza Inhaled Insulin. The easiest way to receive approval for an Afrezza prescription from your insurance company is through Chloe or one of the Pharmacies that stock Afrezza. Both are available to work with insurance companies for prescription approval.  Chloe's contact information is on the Pump Club website. Recommended techniques for using Afrezza: Keep your ead upright while angling inhaler down per instructions. Drink a sip of water to prevent coughing and use at room temperature.
