THIS MONTH:  Endocrinologist Dr. Robert L Thomas, MD PhD, of the UCSD Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, will give an update on diabetic kidney disease. Bring your questions!

Several recent developments are changing how we treat chronic kidney disease in diabetes. We now recognize that our established therapies for kidney protection, such as ACE inhibitors, have focused on the glomerulus. New agents allow us to promote renal blood flow and function in deeper kidney tissues. Among the new therapies are GLP-1 agonists, soluble guanylate cyclase activators, and carbonic anhydrase inhibitors. These offer new opportunities for kidney protection in type 1 diabetes, and endocrinologists and nephrologists are actively working to craft new collaborative, goal-directed guidelines.

LAST MONTH: Open discussion topics:

• ONE Conference highlights

• Kory Hood from Stanford on our motivation for maintaining our Diabetes management

• Davis Ahn on diabetes technology .

• Mini dosing with Glucogon GVoke kit

• Use Flonase before applying new sensors and infusion sets if having adhesive reactions or spray Benadryl on your skin.

• Join a diabetes study to have more personalized diabetes care.

Invitation to Attend the Type One Nation Summit on May 18th

I want to send the SD Insulin Pumpers group a personal invitation to our Meet the Scientist – Type One Nation Summit on May 18th. It will be held at the Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute (ACTRI) building adjacent to the La Jolla ER.  Dr. Pettus and Dr. Boeder will both present the latest in T1D research. I will also have a table about some of our new efforts to prevent hypoglycemia using wearable sensors (CGM + smartwatches). Dr. Mark Heyman, a diabetes psychologist (he has a great podcast), will also speak. It will be a great event.

I truly appreciated the opportunity to speak to your group last year, and I've enjoyed meeting members of the San Diego Insulin Pumpers community. Many of you have generously participated in our research studies. This is our opportunity to tell you about what we've learned so far, and where we're going next.

There is no cost to attend. For more information and to register, just copy and paste the link below:

Many thanks!

THIS MONTH: Open Discussion: Bring your concerns and questions!

LAST MONTH: Conner Mariani, Territory Manager for Insulet/Omnipod, presented Omnipod updates. Omnipods are a pharmacy benefit so it's possible to order and try them out without impacting your tubed pump and supply orders. The Omnipod Dash does not  partner with any sensor products and can be used for looping. The Omnipod 5 is currently approved for use with Libre sensors.

Approval to use Omnipod with a Dexcom 7 sensor is expected later this year. Omnipod currently has an Android phone app, while an iPhone app may be available by the end of the year. Contact information for Connor and Adriana Valencia, Clinical Trainer, and training information is posted on our Pump Club blog (sdinsulinpumpers.blogspot.com) on the Omnipod manufacturer page.

Supplies Donation Policy

We have implemented a Donation Policy due to the increase in supplies being brought to the meetings.

As of the May meeting, please email Margi at margit7@att.net with a list of the items you wish to share with the group.

The list must be received before the 28th of the previous month so it can be included in the newsletter. Interested Pumpers can contact me to request supplies. Please include the brand, model information, and expiration date. You will need to bring your items to the meeting or interested pumpers can email me and I will pass on their request to you. Any supplies remaining at the end of the meeting must go home with you; they can be included in the next month's newsletter.
